Saint Maurice was an Egyptian military leader and a Roman commander of a legion of Christian soldiers from Upper Egypt. They refused an order from Emperor Maximian to harass and kill Christians and to participate in pagan rites. As punishment, Maximian then ordered that every tenth soldier be killed eventually executing the whole legion.
