Cecilia's parents arranged for her to be married to Valerian of Trastevere. Because she was focused above, she is said to have interiorly sung to Jesus while her wedding music was playing. This marked the beginning of her association with music in the Church. Through her influence, her husband and his brother were converted. After they were martyred, Cecilia was martyred for refusing to partake in idol worship. She is remembered in the Canon of the Mass.
