Saint Augustine of Canterbury is the “Apostle to the English” who founded the church in England. He was an Italian monk who eventually became Prior of the monastery. In 597, Pope St. Gregory the Great decided to evangelize England and sent St. Augustine and 30 monks there. It was a dangerous and fearful journey but when they arrived, the pagan King Ethelbert greeted them, was impressed with their message of love and was baptized along with 10,000 other Anglo-Saxons at Christmas that year. Augustine became the 1st Archbishop of Canterbury, laboring patiently, happy with the gradual success, despite frustrations and struggles. All English Christians owe their faith to him.
