Mother Mariana, a nun of the Conceptionist order was born in Spain to noble Catholic parents. In 1594 she succeeded her aunt as abbess of the new Conceptionist monastery in Quito, Ecuador. Difficulties arose at the monastery when supervision was changed from the Franciscans to the local ordinary. Mother Mariana de Jesus was periodically imprisoned in the monastery's own prison because of slander by a group of sisters in the community. Between 1594 and 1634 she purportedly received Marian apparitions under the title of "Our Lady of the Good Event”, which has come to be known as "Our Lady of Good Success”. Around 1610 she had a statue carved of Our Lady of the Good Success. After a life of prayer and severe penances, including the stigmata, Mariana died on January 16, 1635. When her tomb was opened on February 8, 1906 her body was found to be incorrupt.
