Saint Mariana was born to noble parents and the first person to be canonized from Ecuador. She was a third order Franciscan, a mystic who practiced intense mortifications and survived primarily on the Eucharist at daily Mass. She was known to be a healer by making the sign of the cross and sprinkling holy water on the sick. She even restored a dead woman to life. St. Mariana gave her life while caring for plague victims and is called the “Lily of Quito” because after her death a lily sprouted from her blood.
