Saint Pauline (Paulina) of the Agonizing Heart of Jesus, the first female Brazilian canonized saint, was born in Italy and moved to Brazil as a young child. In 1890, she and a friend cared for dying homeless women which began the founding of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. Mother Pauline established convents and centers that cared for the poor, orphans and elderly that had been abandoned by society. She died from complications of diabetes, saying “God’s will be done".
