Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez was born in Spain, married at 27 to Maria, and had three children. Shortly after, his wife and children died, and his business went bankrupt. In sorrow at 35 years old, due to his lack of education and poor health, he laboriously tried to enter the Jesuit order. When he was 37, the Jesuit provincial permitted him to become a Brother Jesuit. In 1579, he became the door-keeper of the Jesuit college of Montesión, befriending many with his kind, compassionate, and prayerful advice. After he died, the Order realized that Alphonsus had mystical graces, ecstasies, and visions of our Lord, Our Lady, and the saints.
