Saint Gwen (Wenna), holy virgin and martyr, was born in Wales. She was very fond of her brother, St. Nectan and followed him to Cornwall to be near his hermitage. She established several churches and chapels in Devon and Cornwall, including St Wenn, St Kew and Cheristow. When returning to Talgarth to visit her family she was murdered by the heathen Saxons who were attacking the town, thus receiving her martyr’s crown at age 29.
