Saint Charles de Foucauld was born into an aristocratic French Catholic family but rejected the faith as a teenager and led a desolate life in the army. He was inspired to resume his faith while in Algeria, by witnessing the devotion of Jews and Muslims. He joined the Trappists, then was a sacristan for the Poor Clares, and in 1901 became a priest. Charles returned to Algeria and lived among the Tuareg people wanting to start a religious order that offered hospitality to all people regardless of their faith. Blessed Charles was shot to death at the beginning of World War I.
