Father Nelson Baker, born in Buffalo, N.Y. came from hard-working simple parents. He was ordained a priest in 1876 after he fought in the Civil War and ran a grain business. Sent to St. Patrick’s Church in Lackawanna, N.Y., he started a mother and infants home, an orphanage, a hospital, nurses’ home, trade school and built a minor basilica. This was called “City of Charity” entrusted under Our Lady of Victory. During the depression, he helped millions. He’s called America’s St. Vincent de Paul, the Don Bosco of the U.S. and Patron of the poor.
