Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg was born in Germany. He entered a Benedictine monastery receiving ordination in 971 and in 972 was named bishop of Regensburg. As bishop he reformed the clergy, restored monasteries, promoted education, preached enthusiastically, and was renowned for his charity and aid to the poor, receiving the title of "the Great Almoner." Legend has it that he tricked the devil to build a church by agreeing to give the devil the first soul that entered the finished church. Wolfgang threw his ax to determine where it should be built, and the first to enter the finished church was a wolf. God's providence prevailed. He died while traveling to Austria.
