Marianne Cope, baptized Maria Anna Barbara Koob, was born in Germany and her family emigrated to the United States the next year. She helped support her family and invalid father until his death and then left home to pursue a religious calling receiving the religious habit of the Franciscans Sisters in Syracuse, New York and new name Marianne. In 1883, by then Superior General, Cope responded to a call to care for the leprosy sufferers in Hawaii. In 1888 she moved to Kalaupapa to care for the dying Fr. Damien. Saint Marianne Cope died of natural causes in 1918 at the age of 80.
