Rene Goupil was a French missionary, and one of the first North American martyrs. He was a surgeon before entering the novitiate of the Society of Jesus. In 1642, he traveled to the Huron missions with Father Isaac Jogues and about 40 others. They were captured by the Iroquois and were tortured. Goupil was killed by a spear to the head. He is venerated as the first Jesuit martyr in Canada and one of three United States martyrs.
